The Woodlands Community
Opened in 1974, The Woodlands is a 28,000 acre, forested community where people live, work, play and learn. Located 27 miles north of downtown Houston on Interstate 45, it encompasses nine residential villages, multiple hospitals and healthcare facilities, and exceptional shopping, dining, entertainment and recreational amenities.
Throughout its 34-year history, The Woodlands has led the way among master-planned communities that practice environmental preservation. Of the 28,000 acres in The Woodlands, nearly 6,000 acres now devoted to green space in parks, golf courses and greenbelts. At build-out, nearly 8,000 acres will remain undeveloped green space.
The Woodlands has led the Houston area in new home sales every year since 1990 and ranks No.1 in Texas and fourth in the nation in new home sales.
Shopping, Dining, Entertainment & HealthThe Woodlands's 1,000-acre Town Center is the destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment. It includes The Woodlands Mall, with over 1.3 million square feet of indoor and outdoor venues.
Market Street, a 34-acre "Main Street" area, provides an outdoor shopping and dining experience. The Woodlands Waterway, a 1.4-mile-long landscaped water feature, links urban residential living to shopping, business, dining and entertainment venues in Town Center.
Seven neighborhood village centers provide conveniently located supermarkets, restaurants and services near residential neighborhoods in The Woodlands.
Memorial Hermann The Woodlands is a 216-bed acute care hospital, and St. Luke's The Woodlands is a faith-based, not-for-profit hospital with 84 beds. It is currently being expanded. Emergency care centers, clinics and doctors' offices of nearly every specialty are also located in The Woodlands.
Lifelong LearningThe Woodlands offers a lifetime of education - preschool through primary, secondary, college and graduate study. The Conroe Independent School District has 19 campuses for students K-12. Ranked highly by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), schools in The Woodlands have low student/teacher ratios and programs for gifted and talented students, vocational and advanced science training and special needs students.
Children in the Village of Creekside Park attend schools located in the Tomball Independent School District. Tomball has a small district area and low student/teacher ratios. The TISD has committed to three school sites in the village, the first of which should be completed for the 2009-2010 school year. A new 400-acre area in the Village of Sterling Ridge is located within the Magnolia ISD.
Private education is available at The John Cooper School, a college preparatory academy for grades K-12; The Woodlands Christian Academy, for grades K-12; St. Anthony of Padua, for grades pre-K-8; and several others. There are more than 30 pre-schools and day care centers available for younger children.
Higher education is available at Lone Star College - Montgomery, part of the Lone Star College System. At Lone Star College - University Center, students can earn bachelor's and master's degrees from six major Texas universities: Texas A & M, University of Houston, University of Houston - Downtown, Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M, and Sam Houston State. Both Lone Star Colleges are located on a 100-acre campus on College Park Drive.
Leisure and RecreationMore than 165 miles of wooded hike and bike trails connect The Woodlands' 110 parks, lakes and ponds, as well as its seven championship golf courses. Neighborhood parks offer swimming pools, spraygrounds, playgrounds, skateboard facilities, jogging and BMX tracks, dog parks, and basketball and tennis courts. Lake Woodlands, a 200-acre lake flanked by two parks, is great for sailing, rowing, and fishing.

They include biomedical, pharmaceutical, and, administrative companies., Throughout The Woodlands, an impressive collection of 51 pieces of, outdoor sculpture add a cultural counterpoint to the wooded landscape., Art and culture find a home at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, an, outdoor amphitheater that accommodates up to 17,000 people for major, touring shows, from pop to opera. The Pavilion is also the summer home, of The Houston Symphony., Waterway Square is a new public plaza featuring a 120-foot-long, cascading water wall with dancing columns of water, boomer jets that, shoot water 60 feet into the air, and fountains choreographed to music and, colored lights.(Shows are at night). A children's interactive fountain is, also located in Waterway Square, which overlooks The Waterway., Golfers in The Woodlands can choose from seven championship golf, courses, with 1,690 acres dedicated to 135 holes of golf., Members of The Woodlands Country Club enjoy the 27-hole Palmer, Course, designed by Arnold Palmer and architect Ed Seay; the 18-hole, Player Signature Course, designed by Gary Player; and the 18-hole, Tournament Course, former home of the Shell Houston Open., Members of another country club, Canongate at The Woodlands, have, access to two 18-hole courses, Panther Trail and The Oaks., Members of The Club at Carlton Woods can enjoy an 18-hole Jack, Nicklaus Signature course and an 18-hole Tom Fazio Championship, course. In 2007, Golf Digest ranked the Nicklaus course the No. 5 best, private course in Texas, while Dallas Morning News ranked it No. 2. The, Fazio course was ranked the No. 1's best new private course in Texas by, Golf Digest in 2007. The Club at Carlton Woods is also ranked among the, 100 Most Prestigious Clubs in America by Golf Connoisseur magazine; it, is one of only two golf venues in the U.S. to feature both a Nicklaus and, Fazio course.
